Research and Innovation

Practices with higher digital patient engagement experience less after-hours documentation and better financial performance, according to an Athenahealth analysis of data from 6,300 practices over a three-year period. Patients noted that they are most interested in using digital tools to access test results, receive appointment reminders, and schedule appointments. Women’s health and behavioral health practices have the highest digital patient engagement scores, while FQHCs have shown the most improvement.

I came across this story last night while I was not watching the Super Bowl: Former Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader Shanna Adamic recounts her experience being misdiagnosed, underdiagnosed, and simply dismissed for several years before finally being diagnosed with a tumor in her ear. She recounts her story in her recently released memoir, “Audacious Optimism.” She now serves as a director of the Oracle Health Foundation in Kansas City. (Her journey as a patient seems like it would make for a great session at HIMSS.)
