Kain Capital makes an undisclosed investment in New York City-based health IT vendor MDLand.

Chicago-based primary care provider Oak Street Health opens its fourth location in Cleveland. The company has seen its shares double to $44 since going public earlier this month in an IPO that brought in $328 million. Oak Street now has 67 facilities in nine states.

Research and Innovation

A survey of 438 behavioral health providers conducted by Tridiuum finds that 81% have used telemedicine for the first time within the last six months. The same percentage reported that virtual visits were as effective or more effective as in-person visits in improving the conditions of their patients. Seventy percent plan to continue with virtual visits once the pandemic is at an end. Nearly half said virtual consults contributed to improved clinical workflows.

Government and Politics

Through HRSA, HHS invests $35 million in projects focused on improving telemedicine access and care in rural communities. Grantees include the Telehealth Network Grant Program, Telehealth Focused Rural Health Research Center Program, among others.

Research and Innovation

An Updox survey finds that telemedicine utilization among physician practices jumped from 19% at the start of the pandemic to 94% as of today. Nearly 60% say telemedicine will be integral to the future success of their practice.

Other

In an effort to ensure their patients have access to telemedicine and educational resources, the Northeast Missouri Health Council will make 300 WiFi hotspots available to patients within its FQHC network thanks to a partnership with the Missouri Telehealth Network. The hotspots will offer those with limited coverage access to unlimited data through June of next year.

XspresSpa opens its second XpresCheck COVID-19 testing location at Newark Liberty International Airport. Capable of conducting 350 tests per day, the service will initially cater to airport and airline employees. The flagship location at JFK in New York (above), which opened in June, began offering tests to passengers earlier this month. An initial announcement earlier this year mentioned that XpresCheck would use AdvancedMD’s EHR.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I saw this: Panasonic has come out with an at-home cubicle for those employees who find themselves missing the “not-quite-solid not-quite-walls” of the office space they once occupied. Available only in Japan for now, they’re priced at just over $800. I imagine it will only be a matter of time until Ikea offers something similar (though you could probably fashion something similar yourself for far less).

Co-founder Naomi Allen, formerly chief growth officer at Livongo, says she hopes to eventually open clinics, and that digital access will remain the priority for now.

Consulting and analytics firm Milliman acquires Torch Insight, healthcare data and analytics technology developed by Leavitt Partners. Milliman will incorporate the Torch Insight into its MedInsight analytics platform.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillion says the company is committed to the expansion of its Walmart Health clinics in the wake of the departure of Sean Slovenski, the health and wellness SVP who had overseen the launch of the clinics for the last two years. The company shows no signs of slowing down its expansion plans, which include opening clinics in Florida next year:

“We recently opened another clinic not far from Bentonville, Elm Springs and it’s a smaller clinic than the one that some of you have seen in Dallas, Georgia …,” McMillion said. “So we’re playing around with it as you would expect, and it’s been interesting to watch how customers are interacting with that experience during the COVID-19 environment. The team has done a great job and the medical doctor and the other professionals in the clinic of keeping people safe, and demand is still strong in an environment where people are not necessarily taking advantage of a lot of preventative care.”

Research and Innovation

A Physicians Foundation survey of 3,500 physicians finds most are not optimistic that their practices will return to “normal” anytime soon:

• Nearly half believe COVID-19 won’t be under control until June of next year.
• Nearly 75% believe the virus will negatively impact patient outcomes because of delayed care, negative impacts on patient payment abilities, and the pandemic-induced closure of practices.
• Nearly 60% believe the virus will lead to a decrease in the number of independent practices.
• Eight percent of respondents, representing 16,000 practices, have already closed their doors, while 43% have reduced staff.
• Twelve percent have switched to virtual visits; 52% say they will increase their use of telemedicine within the next year.

Health IT vendor MTBC reports a 17% increase in Q2 revenue, taking in nearly $20 million. The company saw a dip in quarterly revenue during the COVID-19 lockdown earlier this year, but has since seen patient encounters at client sites return to within 6% of weekly averages seen during January and February.

Research and Innovation

Urgent care clinics across the country saw a peak in patient visits during the month of July, according to new data from Experity and the Urgent Care Association. On average, 253 patients visited urgent cares during the week of July 11, compared with 88 per week in April. The increase seems in keeping with Dr. Jayne’s latest in-the-trenches observations, which, in a nutshell, highlight the stress put on urgent cares as stressed patients try to delay care and avoid hospitals.

Patient safety, evidence-based medicine and technology decision-support nonprofit ECRI partners with the Institute for Safe Medication Practices to form a joint patient safety organization. According to ECRI President and CEO Marcus Schabacker, MD, the new PSO will bring “up-to-date information and real-time guidance to assure healthcare leaders that they’re making the best decisions to keep patients, long-term care residents, and staff safe.”

Ava Clara Bridal Couture in Virginia Beach hosts a bridal gown giveaway for healthcare workers as a way to say thank you for all they’ve done over the last several months. Kaiser Health News looks at the continued pressure primary care physicians find themselves in as a result of COVID-19-induced revenue decreases:

• Corporate owners are giving some practices an ultimatum – show viability or face sale or closure, forcing those practices to cut costs at a time when budgets are already beyond razor-thin.
• Payments for virtual visits are still inadequate, and not all patients have access to technology.
• Most physicians and analysts say transitioning away from fee-for-service to fixed monthly payments for value-based care  will be key to primary care’s survival.

Research and Innovation

Telemedicine number-crunching shows no signs of slowing down: The Chartis Group’s latest data finds that urban residents used telemedicine for primary care visits 28% more than those in rural areas. National utilization of telemedicine has fallen from its peak level of 50% in mid-April; between 18 and 20% of visits are now conducted virtually.

Meanwhile, a study of 1,000 behavioral healthcare providers shows that virtual visits are here to stay. Eighty percent deliver care virtually at least 60% of the time, while 70% say they’ll deliver care virtually 40% of the time moving forward. Twenty percent say they’ll need new EHRs to accommodate anticipated telemedicine capacity.

Other

Piedmont Orthopedics/OrthoAtlanta experiences a ransomware attack, according to DataBreaches.net, which reports that the attackers have already dumped 3.5 GB of data online – including medical records.

In other cybersecurity news, a consultant discovers a database containing the details of 3.1 million patients left exposed online by practice management and marketing company Adit. The consultant, who notified the company, says the data was destroyed by an unknown actor a week later.

Physicians in Alaska share their experiences with telemedicine, with access to technology being the biggest barrier to utilization by the state’s rural patients. Virtual mental health appointments have taken off, according to Cohen Veterans Network President and CEO Anthony Hassan. The clinic network, including one in Anchorage, has seen 98% of its visits go virtual – a big jump from its traditional 18%. “I know (virtual care) isn’t a panacea; people do need to come in,” he said. “But our outcomes in-clinic and telehealth are equal.”
