CareCloud shares a few more details about the acquisition offer it ultimately turned down last week, including the fact that the prospective buyer would likely have taken the company private. The ambulatory health IT vendor has since hired investment bank Citizens JMP to review its capital structure.

HHS offers new funding opportunities for projects related to accelerating the adoption of health IT in behavioral healthcare settings, and to developing novel ways to evaluate and improve the quality of health care data used by AI solutions in healthcare.

Research and Innovation

A Black Book survey of 13,000 physician practice leaders offers insight into how these organizations coped financially during the initial days of the Change Healthcare hack:

• Twenty-seven percent dipped into personal savings or retirement funds.
• Twenty-two percent had to open new lines of practice credit.
• Nine percent applied for personal loans, second mortgages, equity lines of credit, or borrowed from a third party.
• Three percent applied for temporary assistance from their clearinghouse vendor.
• An overwhelming majority of respondents report finding out about the hack from their EHR vendor, accountant, and/or the media rather than their clearinghouse vendor; and that they have been dissatisfied with the amount of clearinghouse vendor communication they’ve received over the last three months.

Senior-focused primary care optimization company Agilon Health reports a 52% increase in Q1 revenue, with results being in line with forecasted guidance. The company has added Graves Gilbert Clinic (KY), Mankato Clinic (MN), Twin Cities Network (MN), and Springfield Clinic (IL) to its physician network.

Canadian Well Health Technologies sees a 37% increase in Q1 revenue to $231.6 million, with its USA Patient and Provider Services business bringing in $140.4 million and its SaaS and technology services bringing in $15.4 million. It sold EHR developer IntraHealth to Healwell AI in February for $24 million.

A Massachusetts medical practice’s former office manager faces charges related to embezzling $650,000 from the practice over a seven-year period. Kathleen Libby transferred funds to a private PayPal account under the guise of medical supply payments, used practice credit cards for personal expenses, and put two of her relatives on the practice’s payroll. (They, presumably, did not perform any actual work.) Her subsequent spending sprees involved purchases from Louis Vuitton, Bloomingdales, and other retailers.

Research and Innovation

A recent survey of 1,000 consumers and 200 RCM professionals finds that patient access to providers is improving, largely due to increased staffing levels, greater utilization of telehealth and self-scheduling tools, and more accurate price estimates. The most cited patient access challenge is the inability to get in quickly to see a provider, also cited as the top challenge in 2022.

CVS Health shares drop after the company releases disappointing Q1 results. Its revenue of $88.4 billion represents a 3.7% increase over last year. Revenues of its health services segment, which includes in-home, in-clinic, and virtual care; pharmacy benefit management; and provider enablement solutions; decreased nearly 10%.

Value-based care and physician practice enablement company Aledade acquires Medical Advantage, a subsidiary of The Doctor’s Company that provides value-based healthcare consulting to practices in Michigan.
