Virtual OCD treatment provider NOCD acquires virtual trauma therapy company Rebound Health. The businesses will operate under newly created parent company Noto, which will branch out to other specialties in the future.

Faced with increasing financial challenges, Valley Medical Group lays off 41 employees. The independent group operates four primary care offices. Technology and AI will be key to providing patient care with fewer staff, according to VMG President and CEO Paul Carlan: “We will be more efficient. We have plans in place to try and improve how we handle patient calls and messages and protocols to refill medications. I think that will help.”

TriZetto Provider Solutions begins notifying patients impacted by a breach of its web portal containing eligibility transaction reports. Hackers first gained access in November 2024. The breach was discovered last October. Affected providers were notified in December by OCHIN, which provides their EHR software and utilizes TriZetto’s billing services. Adapt Integrated Health Care (OR), San Francisco Community Health Center, and the Baltimore City Health Department are among the impacted organizations.

The New York Times looks at the creative ways independent physicians and other medical professionals are finding practice space that meets their budgets and schedules. Whether it’s subleasing space from other physicians, renting weekend space in a practice that’s only open during the week, or making other, hybrid arrangements, clinicians are engaging in off-market arrangements that don’t burden them with high overhead. Psychotherapist Carla Mannino, who rents co-working space in New York City’s Chrysler Building, puts it this way: “I don’t have to worry about HVAC or Verizon. I’m 58 years old. I don’t want to sign a 10-year lease.”

Walmart’s Healthcare Research Institute and Care Access will open research sites this spring in three former Walmart Health clinic locations and one Walmart store. Care Access staff will offer health screenings and information about research opportunities and participation in clinical trials. Walgreens launched its own clinical trials business in 2022. CVS Health launched a similar endeavor in 2021, but commenced a phased closure two years later.

Chicago-based Zarminali Pediatrics raises $110 million in a Series A funding round led by Healthier Capital. The practice, which has locations in nine states and Washington, DC, will use the investment to expand its specialty care offerings and to begin offering telemedicine services around the clock throughout the week.

A federal judge sentences Benjamin Washington to 65 months in prison for his role in a years-long e-prescribing scheme in which he used information stolen from physicians to create fake e-prescribing accounts that his accomplices then used to issue thousands of fraudulent prescriptions for controlled substances, which they picked up at pharmacies and sold for profit. The conspirators also obtained fake drivers’ licenses, paid off phone company employees to reassign legitimate physician cell phone numbers to burner phones, stole a master USPS post office box key, and stole mail.

Behavioral health and post-acute care providers find their interoperability efforts hampered by transaction or integration fees, slow vendor onboarding and timelines, and APIs that don’t fit their everyday workflows, according to Black Book Research.

NextGen Healthcare will pay $19.4 million to settle a class action lawsuit related to a 2023 data breach that it allegedly failed to prevent, resulting in the compromise of patient data.

Kaiser Permanente will pay $46 million to settle a class action lawsuit pertaining to third-party tracking tools on its website and apps that class members say allegedly shared user data without their consent. Kaiser has begun sending settlement notices to 13 million members in eight states and Washington, DC.
