University of North Carolina researchers determine that the state’s now shuttered Healthy Opportunities Pilots saved Medicaid beneficiaries an average of $164 per month, largely due to diversion away from ER visits and inpatient admissions to outpatient primary care appointments. The program was launched in 2022 to evaluate how using Medicaid funding to pay for services related to housing, food, transportation, and safety could improve care outcomes and reduce costs.
