Wisconsin Public Radio profiles children’s author Margi Preus and her forthcoming book, “Snowshoe Kate and the Hospital Built for Pennies.” The illustrated book tells the story of Kate Pelham Newcomb, MD who practiced in Wisconsin near the turn of the 20th century. Newcomb delivered 4,000 babies, some of whom got together for a high school class project that turned into collecting 1 million pennies to build a hospital in honor of “Dr. Kate.” That hospital, eventually built with 11 million pennies, still stands as Lakeland Memorial Hospital.
