This article highlights the mounting frustrations smaller, independent practices are feeling as a result of relatively new downcoding policies enacted by payers like Aetna and Cigna. The automatic downcoding has left physicians strapped for cash and questioning the viability of their business models: “There’s going to be a point where we have to make a serious choice about who we want to be as a practice and what sort of patients we want to serve,” says one physician. “These insurance companies are going to choke us to the point where we can’t afford to keep up with their documentation requirements.”
