The latest investment figures from StartUp Health highlight the confidence investors continue to have in digital health. Nearly $4 billion has been invested in Q2 of this year (including 10 deals over $100 million each), putting 2017 on track to break several funding records. A total of $6 billion has been raised so far. Modernizinig Medicine’s $231 million funding round back in May is perhaps the most relevant to physician practices. While investments in EHR companies managed to stay in the top 10, the vertical saw the least market maturity in the first six months of this year compared to the flashier categories of patient/consumer experience, workflow, and analytics.

The results of a somewhat dated survey of 744 office- and hospital-based physicians in Rhode Island shows – surprise, surprise – no love for EHRs. Both types of providers had the same top issues with the technology – either they denigrated the quality of their interactions with patients, or negatively impacted the amount of time they were able to spend in the exam room. Though the survey was conducted in 2014, I can’t imagine the evolution of EHRs has lessened their concerns (technology-induced physician burnout seems to be on the rise, after all) – though some may have caved and hired scribes to aid with documentation workflow.

Remember when?: Pokemon Go celebrates its first anniversary. And while it hasn’t quite sustained the absurd amount of downloads it saw last summer, it’s still played on a monthly basis by 65 million people. For perspective, Uber has 40 million users a month, Pandora 77 million, and  Spotify 140 million. Though it didn’t have a huge impact in the world of healthcare, it’s less of a flash in the pan than I thought it would be.

A 20-month audit of Montana’s clinics for government employees finds that the facilities have failed to document improvements in outcomes, and have offered no evidence of ROI. The first of the state’s health centers opened in 2012, with five more opening and accruing costs in the $26 million-dollar range over the ensuing years. Auditors cited faulty record keeping and a “cumbersome” EHR system that did not allow for sharing of data between providers.

An Institute for Health Information Technology survey of providers in Georgia reveals top organizational challenges to be lack of interoperability, IT infrastructure costs, cybersecurity threats, lack of a trained workforce, and patient utilization of engagement technologies. (Surveyed vendors also cited connectivity and cybersecurity as top challenges.) Not to be deterred, respondents plan to adopt telemedicine, predictive analytics, and smart phone apps within the next two years. Georgia-based physicians are in a sweet spot when it comes to access to virtual consult expertise. The state has benefitted from telemedicine-friendly legislation over the last several years, and is home to the Georgia Partnership for Telehealth, which has helped to advanced telemedicine capabilities for providers in rural and underserved areas.

President Trump nominates Indiana Health Commissioner Jerome Adams, MD as US Surgeon General. Vice President Pence appointed Adams to his post in 2014 during Pence’s time as governor. No word on whether Adams crossed paths with CMS Administrator Seema Verma during her time in Indiana’s Medicaid trenches. Adams, who according to his LinkedIn profile is a practicing anesthesiologist and associate professor of anesthesiology at Indiana University Health, will take over from Acting Surgeon General Sylvia Trent-Adams. She took over the position in April from Vivek Murthy, MD when Trump gave him the boot. Like Murthy, Adams – who came under fire for a county-wide HIV outbreak in Indiana attributed to dirty needles – will likely focus his public health campaign efforts on the opioid epidemic.

CareCloud adds telemedicine capabilities, including eligibility verification and scheduling tools, to its EHR and PM systems. WellVia will integrate LowestMed’s prescription price transparency search engine with its telemedicine service, giving patients the ability to look up prescription drug prices during virtual consults.

PCP William Thornbury, MD shares his thoughts on how the ACA has affected his practice and his hope for healthcare moving forward at a listening session with HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD and CMS Administrator Seema Verma. After sharing the plight of many patients who, after purchasing mandated insurance, put off seeking care due to high copays and deductibles, he emphasized the need for CMS to pave the way for more telemedicine- and direct primary care-friendly policies:

“I need leadership from the government to help with [telemedicine], and that leadership comes from [CMS]. CMS has got to promulgate that and make that OK. They’ve been dragging their feet on this for a decade and it is not OK. We have got to take our largest driver of health care – chronic disease care – [and] put that to our most efficient delivery model, which is online care. It just takes pennies to do this. You’ve got to put those together.”

Over half of 1,000 AMA-surveyed physicians believe MACRA’s requirements are “very” burdensome, leading less than 25 percent of survey respondents to feel well prepared for the related QPP programs that went into effect this year. Top participation challenges include:

  • Understanding requirements.
  • How MIPS performance is scored.
  • The cost associated with accurately capture and report performance.

The Rhode Island Medical Society is among a number of medical groups that oppose legislation intended to allow law enforcement to access the state’s PDMP. Currently, law enforcement officials must obtain a search warrant before accessing the the digital database of prescription painkillers. If passed, the bill – which will be voted on today – would require investigators to request access via a Rhode Island Health Department employee.

The medical society and other like-minded associations believe such access – already given to law enforcement in 30 other states – would infringe on patient privacy. They emphasized in written testimony earlier this year that the database is “a tool for healthcare, not law enforcement” and “undermines efforts to address the opioid crisis as a medical issue rather than a criminal one.″

End-of-life planning software startup After prepares to launch this August. Founded by Maggie Norris earlier this year, the technology aims to help dying patients and their caregivers access and organize healthcare and legal forms, and coordinate care requests in a compassionate way. “No one likes talking about death and dying, even if it’s your job to have conversations with patients about death and dying,” says Norris. “A lot of times physicians wait for families and patients to come to them with questions. The problem with that is the first stage of grief is denial. How do you make this conversation happen more often and [make it] easier and more accessible? There’s this empty space there, and we’re trying to fill it with software.”
